Our Mission Statement
The cause our group chose to create awareness for is “Body Shaming”. Body shaming is a relatively new term that can be defined as shaming someone for their body type. It can be considered another form of bullying. Many people are familiarized with the possible effects of bullying including cyber-bullying, which can be just as damaging as bullying. Our group chose to do this social issue because now that social media i.e. Instagram, Twitter, etc. is widely used, people like to “hate” of pictures by calling them “fat,” “ugly,” “disgusting,” “anorexic,” and more. So many girls are made to feel inferior because of their size, and this needs to end. Therefore, we thought we should let people stop and think about how body shaming can really hinder someone’s self-confidence. Our group wants to bring positivity out of a negative situation and make people, especially women feel less insecure about their bodies.
Our group is using art to show how ladies of all shapes can be beautiful. The media conditions us to think you have to be super skinny to look gorgeous. Therefore, we want to promote body acceptance. Our goal is to make a poster to illustrate the beauty in all body shapes and sizes. In addition, our group will get as many pictures of women writing one of our hashtags (#StopTheBS #StopBodyShaming #YouAreBeautiful) some place on their body that is school appropriate, so we can stick on the mirrors of girls bathrooms around KMHS. We would like to get at least 20 people to post a picture of themselves with either of the hashtags written on themselves under #STOPTHEBSKMHS on Instagram. This project is a great way to get people to think before they say something hurtful about someone’s body.
