Mission Statement:
Our chosen cause is turning litter into recycling. This is not just a major issue in our community but a major issue around the world. A change needs to be made and it needs to be made now. A small piece of litter you have in your hand today could amount to billions of litters at the end of the year. It’s so easy to throw trash on the ground or out your car window but in our future generation, people will notice the importance of keeping our environment clean. Our generation as teenagers are always in a rush and do not think about throwing stuff away and see it as an inconvenience. Billions of dollars are spent just to clean up the litter that many people have thoughtlessly tossed out on the streets and other public spaces and here are a few statistics on littering:
- 9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean every year.
- $11.5 billion is spent every year to clean up litter.
- The most common object found during litter clean-up is fast food litter.
- 75% of people admitted that they littered in the past 5 years.
Carina and I have decided to pick up trash on our school campus. We will paint the water bottles we have collected and post them on a white banner to represent how old things can be created into new and beautiful things. We thought it would be interesting to create something a little messy and sloppy to symbolized what the campus could look like if things weren’t picked up and cared about. It will be a learning experience and maybe change the way people view littering. We took a few picture of people recycling water bottles. Our GOAL in this project is to get people to start recycling more to create awareness that trash should be recycled instead of being thrown out of your window to kill harmless animals or pollute the environment. If we take action now in our community, our future generations will prosper.
Carina and I are shocked on how much litter you can find around our school campus. We are trying to create awareness that liter we find should not be thrown out your car windows, around the trashcan instead of inside them, or even behind the school vending machines. Litter shouldn't just be thrown in the trashcan carelessly it should be recycled. We are getting this message across by creating a poster explaining that litter can be changed into something new by recycling.
Journal Entry 2 September 28, 2015 Today we began constructing our poster. We painted different designs on the water bottles to symbolize that something you might think is trash can be turned into something new, and beautiful. We wrote "One mans trash is another mans treasure" because recycling companies see that the bottles(and other recyclable items) can be turned into new products and in the end will be to our future generations benefit. |
Journal Entry 3:
September 29,2015
Today we hung up our poster in a main hallway of our campus to only hope people will create awareness and start recycling. We tried our best to make our poster look sloppy but readable. The "T" is dirty to symbolize trash and as the word treasure progresses the letters look clean and new like recycled items could be.
